JACKSONVILLE ELECTRIC AUTHORITY PIONEERS ROADSIDE SAFETY PROGRAM

In an effort to reduce injuries caused by errantly controlled vehicles colliding with utility structures, a comprehensive roadside safety program for the modification of certain sites was developed. This included the development of utility placement guidelines; construction of a comprehensive accident data file; location and use of programs to prioritize candidate cost-effective safety treatments; the development of a comprehensive set of safety improvement methods along with guidelines for their use; and the identification of example safety improvement sites, design, and implementation of specific improvements. The effort is expected to demonstrate to utility companies that taking responsibility for certain aspects of roadside safety is an appropriate, and even economic approach.
