REINFORCING LOADED STEEL COMPRESSION MEMBERS
The paper develops a method to determine the capacity of a column reinforced under load based on AISC requirements. The analysis is applicable to any kind of column and reinforcement, but has not been verified by testing. The reinforced column is treated as a frame with two members joined to each other by rigid links. The members are the reinforcement and the unreinforced column. The reinforced column of lehgth L has two critical lengths: L sub 1 and L sub 2 which define its behavior. The values of L sub 1 and L sub 2 are dependent on the relative stiffness of the reinforcement and column. The design criteria for determining the capacity of the column are given.
