SAWCUT AND SEAL MAY PREVENT REFLECTIVE CRACKS. PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE/MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY '89
The Federal Highway Administration and the Asphalt Insititue have published guidelines on the sawcut and seal technique to stop the reflective cracking in asphalt overlays above portland cement concrete pavement joints. The article describes the basic mechanism of reflection cracking. The 5-step sawcut and seal technique is described. The steps are as follows: locate and reference existing joints in the PCC slab; placing the overlay; sawcutting directly above the referenced joint; cleaning and drying the sawcut; and sealing the sawcut. The FHWA is monitoring 11 projects using this technique. Experience in New York is discussed, and experience in Connecticut is noted.
