PRESENTATION ON LEGAL KNOWLEDGE, SOCIAL NORMS, DRIVING LAWS AND RISKY DRIVING. THE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY OF RISKY DRIVING. PROCEEDINGS OF AN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM HELD IN SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA, APRIL 28-MAY 1 1988

Comments are made on each of the presentations and certain common themes among them are noted and discussed. All presentations refer to risky behavior as a decision. This is in contrast to risky behavior solely as determined by lifestyle. All the presentations supported the importance of social and normative influences on driving behaviours and risk taking. All the papers deal with the role of law in avoidance of risky driving behaviors. Laws, although not especially effective in some instances, continue to play a key role in prevention of risky driving. It is suggested that risky driving is a concept with at least three dimensions: driving behaviors that increase risk of negative consequences (statistical risk); risk taking as a personal trait or behavior; and perceived risk.
