FEPNLE MODEL FOR EVALUATION AND DESIGN OF OVERLAYS FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT

An analytical model, FEPNLE, has been developed based on finite element technique for the structural evaluation of flexible pavements and design of overlays incorporating various parameters such as loading characteristics, availability of material, and environmental conditions. The model has been calibrated using the intensive data collected from the Northern Region of India from Benkelman Beam deflection studies on existing flexible pavements. Validation of the model was done by comparing the surface deflection and curvature measured in the field on the overlaid pavements of known thicknesses with the computed values obtained from the calibrated model. It has been observed that there is a very good agreement between the observed and computed values within a variance of 3% for the surface deflection and 8% for curvature of the deflection basin. The model is found to be useful for the evaluation and strengthening of the existing weak flexible pavements with different types and thicknesses of overlays.
