DROUGHT TOLERANT MEDIAN LANDSCAPING

Palm Desert, California retained a landscape architect to design a pilot median about 1/2-mile long on a Palm Desert major thoroughfare, modeled after the Phoenix/Scottsdale program, which aims to reduce maintenance costs while providing aesthetically pleasing, desert-type plantings along medians. The resulting design and landscape installation cost $37,000. The landscapes installed were all native plants and the irrigation system was designed with all low-volume drip emitters and no spray heads. This article discusses the pilot project results and further projects undertaken.
