ARIZONA'S ROADSIDE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

This article discusses the Arizona Department of Transportation's (ADOT's) roadside vegetation management program. Among ADOT's objectives is to have vegetation growing on all roadside areas where its presence is appropriate. The desired vegetation is low growing grasses on the shoulders and a mix of taller grasses, forbs, shrubs, and trees beyond the shoulder to the right-of-way boundary. The vegetation management program is intended to remove undesirable vegetation (weeds and excessive growers) in such a manner that there is no regrowth and at the same time assist desirable vegetation to become established and remain vigorous. The roadside vegetation maintenance program coordinates chemical spraying, mowing, blading, reseeding/planting, fertilizing, and brush removal. This article provides information on the following: herbicide categories; herbicide field applications; mowing; reseeding; fertilizing; brush and seedling tree control; fire control; and environmental considerations.
