STATE OF THE ART OF PIPE JACKING METHOD AND ITS FUTURE
This article describes the different types of pipe jacking methods currently used in Japan. Details of the suitability of these methods and the associated work required with them for different types of soil are provided. The problems associated with pipe jacking are also discussed, along with techniques used to overcome them. Problems include the estimation of thrust needed to drive the machine, and control of the alignment of the machine itself. Formulae to estimate the thrust required are provided, as are methods to decrease thrust where necessary. The latter methods include use of: a) a cutting edge with a nail; b) a cutter projected from a pipe; c) enlargement of the sectional area of the cutting edge; d) bentonite suspension; and e) a curtain sheet. Control of the rate of deflection of the machinery can be effected by a number of means. Among these are: a) the use of a rotating cutter head; b) use of general thrust jacks, ( only effective for short distance drilling); and C) by using a guide pipe.
