POLICY ASSESSMENT OF THE 55 MILE PER HOUR SPEED LIMIT
The report presents historical description of the development of the policy. The following areas are researched: Motor vehicle fuel savings; safety aspects; economic impacts-government revenues, government costs, impacts on the transportation industry and on other business and industry (insurance, etc.), impacts on households; social impacts; legal impacts-state legislatures, enforcement. International experience with the 55 mph speed limit is described. Conclusions and recommendations on the policy, enforcement, and data requirements are given.
