HEAVY VEHICLES ON LONG-SPAN BRIDGES. APPENDIX: DANISH ROAD BRIDGE REGULATIONS

Danish axle load measurements have provided data ever since the early 1970's which have enabled an evaluation of the effects of traffic loads on big bridges to be carried out. In order that the traffic could flow smoothly it was decided that it should be possible to transport a heavy vehicle across the bridges together with the normal traffic, i.e. Without restrictions of any kind. The most important parameter for the establishment of the contribution of normal traffic is the unit load. It became possible to determine the unit load in various places across the country, partly by means of other weighbridges, partly by means of periodic vehicle registration in heavily trafficked areas. The size of the heavy transport which is allowed to cross a bridge is evaluated on the basis of edp-simulations by means of random groups of vehicles, generated from a predetermined unit load.
