THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF PEENED FILLET WELDS UNDER VARIABLE AMPLITUDE LOADING
This report was carried out under contract to the transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL). The objective of the work was to obtain some fatigue test results for peened transverse non-load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to various amplitude stress spectra, in order to determine whether peening is beneficial in such circumstances. The specimens consisted of a plate with a transverse attachment fillet welded centrally on each surface. They were fabricated from steel to BS 4360, grade 50b. Details of the method of welding were provided. Specimens were hammer peened either using a 12.7mm diameter tool and four passes, or using a 6.3mm diameter tool with two passes. Some specimens were also stress relieved after peening. All specimens were subjected to axial loading in a hydraulic fatigue testing machine, with a frequency of 12 hz. The variable amplitude tests were carried out using 2 different spectra: the axial loading spectra and a Raleigh distribution of stress ranges. Both had approximately the same block length and in both cases the individual stress cycles were applied in random order. In addition, a few tests were carried out using a variety of the axial spectra in which the small stress ranges were applied at positive stress ratios. The improvement in strength shown when using the peening technique were presented and discussed.
