PLATE SHIELD FOR TUNNELS
SCUDO A LAME PER GALLERIE
An illustrated article describes the design and fabrication of a plate shield for the excavation of twin motorway tunnels. The shield, claimed to be amongst the largest ever built, was prefabricated from steel plate in sections of a size and weight compatible with transport facilities and bolted together on site. The basic characteristics of the machine are as follows: longitudinal extension with cutters open 8.8 m; longitudinal extension with cutters closed 7.8 m; transverse extension on the perimeter of the arc 28.7 M. The propulsion system comprises 26 hydraulic jacks of 60 T each, 28 of 160 t, and 8 of 300 t. The tunnels under construction are northwest of the town of algiers and constitute the completion of the oued ouchaia radial road.
