A SURVEY OF TOWN PLANNING AND TRANSPORTATION IN THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC

A summarized and condensed examination and evaluation of urban traffic in the German democratic republic must take into account the current conditions of city planning, together with their structural facets. Heavy emphasis is placed on the housing construction program as an important element of social policy. The relation between mobility and modal split determines the focal points of local transport policy. This policy is influenced considerably by a priority treatment of public local transport. Individual modes of transportation, however, are gaining importance due to the rising level of motorization and the increase in bicycle traffic. (a)
