CONSEQUENCES OF DIFFERENT BUS SERVICE LEVELS. REPORT ON THE SWANSEA CASE STUDY

This report describes an analysis of on-bus and household questionnaire data collected in swansea to gain insight into the effects of bus service levels on use of those services. This case study is part of a three year research project to examine the effects of differences in bus service levels, focussing on two service level criteria: bus service frequency and access to bus stops. For two of the other studies see IRRD 288411 and 8105498. The basic approach of the analysis used in this particular study is to calculate bus trip rates' for zones' used in the study, and relate these to aspects of the bus service such as service headway, using regression techniques to establish elasticities of bus use'. The report contains the following sections: chapters two and three describe the data available and the methodology used in the study; chapter four presents a brief analysis of the data in terms of general bus use, while chapter five describes the analysis of elasticities; chapter six presents the summary and conclusions; and chapter seven contains suggestions for further research.
