THE SIGNIFICANCE AND MEASUREMENT OF VARIABILITY IN TRAVEL BEHAVIOUR --TRANSPORTATION PLANNING METHODS. PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR M HELD AT THE PTRC SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, SUSSEX UNIVERSITY, ENGLAND, JULY 14-17, 1986. VOLUME P282
Most transport data sets contain only one day household travel data, from which it is not possible to determine how much of the variability in behaviour is due to intra-or inter-personal differences, nor make inferences about weekly travel (e.g. How often people shop). In some cases this is an important limitation: in the Hong Kong road pricing study, for example, analysis of one-day set showed that approximately 40% of cars remained at home on an average weekday, but this gives no indication of how many cars are normally only used at weekends (and thereby would be unaffected by road pricing charges). The paper reviews recent work on day-to-day variability in behaviour, and presents some empirical results from seven day nts data and five day activity data from Adelaide. In the former we examine the effects of level of bus service on patronage, while the activity data is used to experiment with different graphical and numerical measures of variability. In both cases we are able to identify relationships which could not be found using one day data. The paper concludes with a discussion of the areas where an understanding of variability is important, against which has to be balanced the costs and difficulty of obtaining multi-day travel data from respondents.(a) for the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 812674.
