ANTI-STRIPPING AGENTS - FUNCTIONS, APPLICATIONS AND TEST METHODS --THIN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT SURFACINGS. REPORT OF A WORKSHOP AT THE NEW ZEALAND ROADING SYMPOSIUM, THE ACADEMY, WELLINGTON, AUGUST 1983
This paper discusses the function of fatty amines used as anti-stripping agents. The chemical properties and formulae of fatty amines most suitable for use as anti-stripping agents are described, as is the chemical reaction enabling these chemicals to act as a binder between aggregate and bitumen surfaces. Guidelines for the normal range of dosage required to achieve active and passive adhesion are provided in tabular form. The chemical stability of fatty amines is also discussed. Methods of application of the anti-stripping agent are also described briefly, in surface dressings, in hot-mix asphalt pavements, and in cold mixes with cutbacks. Use of anti-stripping agents also makes it possible to spray the tack/prime coating even if the underlying surface is wet and it also prevents the coating from being washed away by rain. Tests used to predict the behaviour of bitumen and aggregates with regard to stripping are also discussed. Brief details are given of the following immersion tray test; dynamic, static and Marshall immersion tests; boiling water tests; immersion-compression procedure; and split cylinder tests. Safety precautions advisable when using fatty amines are also discussed briefly, with health hazard ratings. For the covering abstract of the workshop see IRRD 812631.
