BOREHOLE RADAR APPLIED TO SITE INVESTIGATIONS PRIOR TO TUNNELLING --TUNNELLING 88. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 5TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, TUNNELLING 88, ORGAINZED BY THE INSTITUTION OF MINING AND METALLURGY, WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE BRITISH TUNNELLING SOCIETY, THE INSTITUTION OF MINING ENGINEERS AND TRRL, LONDON, APRIL 18-21, 1988

A recently developed borehole radar system, ramac, opens new possibilities for obtaining detailed information about the rock structure at large distances from investigation boreholes. The radar uses electromagnetic waves concentrated in a short pulse (5-10 m) to probe the rock. The ramac system can be applied both in single hole and crosshole investigations which provides flexibility in the design of an investigation program. In a number of applications the radar has proven its capability to detect fracture zones, dykes, old boreholes and tunnels. Some case histories related to tunnelling will be presented. The borehole radar is a unique instrument for mapping structures in rock since it combines high resolution, on the order of meters, with investigation ranges on the order of a hundred meters.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 812521.
