'POURABLE CONCRETE' USED IN RAKEWOOD BRIDGE RENOVATION

This article described the use of pourable concrete during essential repairs to fine crossheads in the viaduct section of the m62 motorway known as rakewood bridge. The edges of the areas to be repaired were disc cut to form a clean profile. Contaminated concrete was then removed from affected areas using pneumatic breakers. All steel was grit blasted to remove corrosion prior to treatment with nitroprime zincrich. The concrete substrate was grit blasted and washed down with a high pressure air/water jet to ensure a total bond between existing and repair concrete. Special care was taken in the design and erection of shuttering around the crosshead repair zones. The concrete repair material was penderoc La. The crosshead beams were some 40m above the ground and work was carried out from scaffolding suspended under the bridge deck. In order to provide suitable working conditions the site had to be protected with tenting and space heaters had to be used whenever the temperature fell below 5 degrees C.
