EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF NAILING FOR STABILIZING UNSTABLE SLOPES

EXEMPLES D'UTILISATION DU CLOUAGE POUR LA STABILISATION DE PENTES INSTABLES

The nailing of unstable slopes has only become common practice in France during the last few years. There are therefore very few publications on the subject and this does not facilitate the task of the project engineer who has to choose between several remedial solutions. This article gives examples of studies that, over the years, have enabled the laboratoire des ponts et chaussees to acquire a wider experience and to propose a design methodology which has been described in a previous issue of the bulletin de liaison. The nailing of unstable slopes is mainly used in cases where traditional earthworks or drainage methods necessitate large-scale operations or even impose constraints unacceptable for existing structures. The examples of embankments and cuttings illustrate, in particular, the possibility of working within the confines of the existing right-of-way without disturbing initial stability conditions. In the case of unstable slopes, the two examples presented show that the extension of the technique to large-scale movements remains subject to a better knowledge of interaction phenomena and that at present caution is called for. In all cases the success of this technique is more than ever linked to an accurate estimation of the phenomena and stresses involved. It is in this spirit that this mainly descriptive article must be read in conjunction with the design methodology previously proposed by the laboratoire des ponts et chaussees.
