KEEPING TRACK OF HIGHWAY SIGNS

This article is a reprint of an article, originally entitled "Inventories are Better Than Memories," by R.L. Carstens of Iowa State University which appeared in "Technology News." It is reprinted from "Technology Exchange," a publication of the Louisiana Transportation Research Center. It describes two ways of overcoming the problem of having to prove an appropriate sign was in place at the time of an accident. One way is for the highway authority to conduct its own investigation following an accident that might reasonably be expected to result in a claim. The other action is to have an inventory of traffic control devices so that there can be a definitive answer concerning whether a particular sign was in place at a particular time.
