BARRIER COATINGS
The corrosion preventive barrier coating system is described which may be used as a primer, intermediate, or finish coat. It is typified by an inert pigmentation at low pigment volume concentrations, and produces a tight, cohesive film with significantly low permeability to water, oxygen, and ionic material. The system is exemplified by a wide range of coatings such as coal tar enamels, low-build vinyl lacquers, epoxies, aliphatic urethanes, and coal tar epoxies. Its mechanism of protection is described. It is essential that ion-producing pigments are replaced by inert non-soluble pigments in the formulation of the barrier system. Vehicle slection, and film thickness are also described. The multi-coat vinyl barrier system, the chlorinated rubber barrier system, the epoxy polyamide barrier system, the aluminized mastic barrier system, coal tar epoxies, barrier systems based on epoxy primers and urethane topcoats, and urethane barrier systems are discussed. These are examples of many others that provide protection for steel.
