PROBABILISTIC CONSOLIDATION ANALYSIS WITH MODEL UPDATING

A procedure for probabilistic evaluation of consolidation settlements in clay deposit is presented, which is based on conventional theory of consolidation in conjunction with reliability methods. A probabilistic analysis of the consolidation settlements of a clay deposit due to additional stresses induced by the weight of an offshore platform has been performed according to this procedure. Uncretainities in stress history, initial stress state, loading and clay deformation properties have been included in the analysis. The analysis has been performed for conditions representative during the planned lifetime of the platform, and the probability of exceeding a critical consolidation settlement during this period of time has been calculated. Studies of uncertainty have shown that the major contributions to the total uncertainty is due to uncertainty in the loading in terms of the additional stresses caused by the weight of the platform. It was also shown that just one settlement measurement fairly early after the installation of the platform is enough to remove most of the uncertainty in the prediction of the settlements occurring during the lifetime of the platform.
