TEACHING ADOLESCENTS ABOUT ALCOHOL AND DRIVING. A TWO-YEAR FOLLOW-UP
The study analyzes the effectiveness of the Teams, Games, Tournaments (TGT) approach to alcohol education among adolescents. The TGT program uses game playing as a teaching device and emphasizes group achievement. Teams of Students with varying levels of alcohol knowledge study and compete among themselves during 4 weeks of daily 50-minute sessions. The program has alcohol education and self-management components. The results are presented from a 2-year follow-up of 389 students who participated in the TGT program, 267 who had traditional instruction, and 284 who had no instruction. Forty-nine percent were seniors and 29 percent juniors. The analysis focuses on measuring maintenance of positive behavior changes resulting from the TGT program. TGT participants maintained previous positive changes over 2 years whereas the traditional and no instructions groups showed little or no change.
