DANZIGER BRIDGE. A VIW FROM THE TOWER
The design and construction is described of the new Danziger Bridge across the Industrial Canal in New Orleans, Louisiana. It has a 320-ft vertical lift steel box girder span over the navigation channel with 150-feet high steel towers at each end. The bridge is 3,270 feet long abutment to abutment. The new bridge carries 3 lanes with shoulders in each direction with opposing traffic separated by a median barrier. The lift span of the bridge is so designed that the passage is visible without the nagging overhead clutter of a truss bridge, and the operator commands an unobstructed view of the whole structure. The lift span was shop-fabricated in 3 sections both longitudinally and transversely and shop-assembled. Other details of the installation are briefly summarized.
