LIGHT RAIL: THE AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVE

Many cities that can't afford heavy rail or even express busways are putting their money into light rail transit, with its low capital, operating, and maintenance costs. Other attractions of light rail are its ability to become a part of a community with limited disruption because it can operate on steep grades and sharp curves, use existing right-of-ways or streets, station design which can match that of its surroundings, various forms of alternative financing such as property tax levies, state and local funds, and turnkey contracts as well as its extreme flexibility to operate over varying types of surfaces.
