THE USE OF AUTOMATIC CLASSIFIER EQUIPMENT IN U.K. LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Automatic classifiers which record vehicle length and speed have been available since the early 1980s. With the recent introduction of lower-cost units capable of recording vehicle axle classifications, there is a potential for increased use of automatic classifiers. This article examines the use of such equipment within local authorities, in particular the type of information collected, and how it is processed and stored. The results are based upon a questionnaire sent in April 1988 to all County Councils in England and Wales, London Boroughs and Metropolitan Districts.
