THE FAROE BRIDGES: STUDIES AND IMPLEMENTATION. PART 1
An account is given of the sequence of work carried out to carry part of the E4 highway link between Scandinavia and Germany across the water between the Danish islands of Sealand and Falster. Comprehensive site investigations and design studies led to a bridge connection via the small island of Faro. The bridge consisted on one side of continuous girder with 80 m spans and a cable-stayed bridge with 120 m, 290 m and 120 m spans over the navigation channel. A steel box girder superstructure was chosen for the cable-stayed bridge with piers and pylons in concrete. Investigations started in 1963, preliminary designs completed in 1975, and construction carried out from 1980 to 1985. Details of the foundations of sandfilled caissons and driven reinforced concrete piles with a pile cap of part tremie concrete and part reinforced concrete cast in a prefabricated cofferdam are given. The complex structures, especially the pile foundations and the cable-stayed bridge required comprehensive edp calculations in design and during construction. Large jack-up barges floating cranes and pile rigs were also used. Regular inspection with precise measurement of possible movements are planned for the life of the bridge.
