EVA MODIFIED BINDERS
This article reviewed the influence of different eva copolymers on bitumen properties. The influence was determined by measuring the softening point (r and b) and penetration (25 degrees) values for both modified and unmodified binders. In all 10 grades of escorine ultra evo copolymers covering a wide range of molecular weight and vinyl acetate (va) content were considered. All data presented related to 70 pen grade bitumen with 5% by mass incorporation of eva copolymers. The resistance to permanent deformation of 30% stone content hra wearing course mixtures to schedule 1a BS 594 (1985) recipe method, containing the same 10 eva modified binders was also evaluated using the Marshall and wheeltracking test procedures. All of the grades of eva copolymer evaluated produced an increase in the softening point (r and b) of 70 pen bitumen. The degree of this increase varied considerably from one grade of eva copolymer to another. Both the molecular weight and va content of the eva copolymers influenced the degree of modification produced. Resistance to deformation of hra wearing course mixtures was markedly improved. The degree of resistance to deformation was closely related to the softening point (r and b) of the binder. (TRRL)
