PROOF TESTING OF ROAD FOUNDATIONS
This paper renews methods of proof loading reasonably available in the UK and considers the recent developments and trends which may allow more meaningful and standardized testing to be carried out. Small scale tests such as the dynamic cone penetrometer are not discussed. The modulus values obtained from such tests will be dependent upon rate of loading, area of loading and intensity of load and it is desirable to standardize test methods in order to establish valid historical data. The most frequently used proof test is the static plate load heaving test. Other methods utilizing equipment readily available in the United Kingdom are deflectograph or deflection beam testing. Overseas methods are typified by three types of equipment: the dynaflect, the dynaplate and falling weight deflectometers. These allow frequent quantitative evaluation of the performance of the road foundation under simulated actual loadings. Compaction meters are available on certain rollers which may, in conjunction with rigorously executed proof testing of trial areas, provide a continuous quality assurance of road foundation construction during the compaction process.
