REPAIR OF HIGHWAY VIADUCTS USING 'SUPERPOUR' CONCRETE

This article describes the mix design of two shrinkage compensated flowable concretes and gives a method for repairing degraded concrete in tressle crossbeams using such concrete. Amendments to the model specifications concerning replacement concrete listed in the Department of Transport'S bd 27/86 are suggested. The repair method consists of the complete removal of degraded and contaminated concrete, preferably by water jetting, and its replacement with a fine concrete having the wet consistency of wet gruel. This is poured or pumped into the bottom of timber faced shuttering to reform the desired profiles. The shutters must be proved by filling them with clean water prior to concreting, and this water must be thoroughly drained from the formwork before concreting is introduced. Amendments to the model specifications given in bd 27/86 concern the following topics: the temperature at which cube strength is measured; quality assurance of the capability of the material manufacturer; flow through tests; the ambient temperature for the substrate at the time the repairs are effected; and protection of the manufacturer against deformation following misuse of his product.
