DYNAMIC SHEAR MODULES AND FABRIC: PART I, DEPOSITIONAL AND INDUCED ANISOTROPY
A torsional simple shear-resonant column device was used to perform experiments on hollow cylindrical samples consisting of glass spheres with two different diameters. The purpose of the investigation was to relate the dynamic shear modulus along the axis of the device to the internal state, or fabric, of the granular material as it was sheared in various directions. All tests were conducted with the mean stress constant. In samples sheared as deposited, the dynamic shear modulus decreased monotonically with shearing. Slight differences in the stress-strain response and in the behaviour of the dynamic modulus for different directions of shearing were observed. Differences in the volume change were due either to the difference in the intermediate principal stress along the various paths or to the depositional anistropy. In samples that were subjected to either one or 10 half-cycles of preshearing and subsequently sheared in various directions, the influence of the induced anisotropy was apparent as differences in the stress-strain response, dynamic modulus and volume change along the different stress paths.
