TRANSIT FACILITIES IN HONG KONG

The apparent success of transit in Hong Kong can be said to be due to a combination of factors. Increased trip-making on transit is caused by high population density, high economic activity, general affluence and low car ownership. The operation of transport services is facilitated by positive planning by government and operators, a stable political environment, a flexible and commercial approach in transit operations with suitable public monitoring and control. To encourage continued investment, the profit control scheme gives the necessary financial incentives to operators. Thus, direct Government subsidy is unnecessary. As modernization of the South-eastern coastal region in the People's Republic of China continues to gain momentum, it is expected that there will be an increased demand for transit connection between Hong Kong and China. New highways and interchanges are being built in preparation for transit in a new era. This paper provides a general account of the facilities in Hong Kong and how they are planned, administered, and operated.
