RAIL-ROAD COMPETITION. THE LIMITS OF THE RAILWAY NETWORK

CONCURRENCE RAIL-ROUTE. LES LIMITES DU RESEAU FERROVIAIRE

Is the complementarity of road and railway a myth? The analysis of combined transport, compared with road possibilities, gives the opportunity to shed light on the difficulties that rail transport meets with picking up the traffic far from rail. As the profitability laws lead the railway companies to concentrate their supply on a few links to cut down the number of terminals, this approach questions the consequences of the present policy. It gives also an evaluation tool to examine the economical, fare or technical choices of railways.
