PLANNING TO AVOID CONGESTION IN MAJOR SUBURBAN ACTIVITY CENTERS

Suburban activity centers have become the most controversial development issue of the 1980's. The development of suburban activity centers was anticipated during the 1960's and much talked about in theoretical terms by urban planners of that time. Several of these activity centers began to form during the 1970's. During the 1980's, metropolitan geography has altered as the theoretical polycentric urban areas have become a problematic reality. This paper describes an effective approach to meet this development challenge, successfully accommodating major commercial suburban activity centers.
