COMPUTERIZED PARKING ANALYSIS FOR CBD'S: A TOOL FOR EVALUATION TRENDS IN THE 1990'S

The transportation consulting professional is often called upon to evaluate and recommend solutions to parking problems. The most common settings for such evaluations are central business districts (CBD) of major cities. Parking in the CBD of a major city is constantly fluctuating due to factors such as transit usage, new developments, types of commercial properties, ridesharing and changing parking supply. The CBD of Pittsburgh has added over 5.0 million square feet of office space in the past five years. However, parking supply in the CBD has been reduced and outlying parking areas with shuttle bus service have been implemented. These factors, along with others, have created a dynamic situation which is constantly being evaluated in many aspects. THe types of analysis required and the steadily growing and changing environment led to the development of a computer model of parking for the Pittsburgh CBD. This paper describes this computer model.
