DEATH BEGINS AT 65 MPH
The increase of the speed limit on rural roads from 55 mph to 65 mph comes under discussion in this article which notes a 20 percent increase in the number of fatalities on those roads which have raised the speed limit. Also discussed is how the Department of Transportation Secretary, James Burnley, apparently misread the findings of a report from a study conducted by the DOT with regard to the effects of the increased speed limit and the lawsuit that the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) has against the DOT for not enforcing its 10 percent withholding of state highway funds to those states where more than 50 percent of its motorists exceed the designated speed limit.
