REPORT TO THE LEGISLATURE ON THE PERFORMANCE AND EFFECTS OF STUDDED TIRES

The results are reported of studies which indicate that there is ample evidence that studded tires have caused serious pavement wear on the more heavily travelled highways. The pavement wear due to studded tires has also resulted in other potential hazards to safe driving because of loss of traffic lane markings, creation of wheel ruts, and reduction in skid resistance of cement concrete surfaces. Also, there does not appear to be competent evidence that sudded tires do in fact reduce the risk of accidents. One-half inch pavement depressions, increase in chances for hydroplaning and an increase in the ambient noise levels are other effects of studded tire use.
