THE CULWAY DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM

This report documents the design, specifications, set up requirements, operation and features of the single lane Culway data acquisition system (das). The das utilises an energy efficient version of ARRB's modular microprocessor based data acquisition systems (ambdas), and performs the automatic and unmanned data acquisition and logging function for the Culway high speed weigh in motion and traffic classifying system. The das is coupled to strain gauge transducers attached to the underside roof of a suitable concrete road culvert, allowing measurement of the strain within the culvert structure as vehicles pass. Two axle detecting sensors, located on the road pavement above the culvert, synchronise this strain measurement, but also allow vehicle speed and axle configurations to be determined. The arrival data and time of each vehicle at the culvert is also logged, allowing vehicle headway and traffic flow to be evaluated. Data, stored internally in the das, are transferred at convenient intervals, via an rs232-c serial interface to a personal portable computing system such as an IBM or compatible machine. These data are in a raw coded form and require post acquisition data processing to produce meaningful information. Included in the report are descriptions and set up requirements for the various das modules and peripheral components; details of the internal structure and operation of the das for both its operating system environment and its data acquisition and logging process; descriptions of the recorded coded formats of all logged data; and descriptions of the various system software modules together with software generation information. Specifications, a command summary, logged data examples, module configuration details and circuit and assembly diagrams are included as appendices.
