Summarizes changes in modernization and incorporation in London during the 19th and 20th centuries to emphasize that many current debates in urban transport in Southeast Asia have a long pedigree. The main features of Tokyo's public transport history since the Meiji Restoration (1867) are outlined. Hong Kong's function as a filter of both Western and Eastern transport technology and organization en route to Southeast Asia is highlighted. Attention is focused on urban public transport in Southeast Asia: Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Surabaya, and Chiang Mai. At the end the modernization and incorporation process in cities both inside and outside Southeast Asia is described.
