DURABILITY OF CONCRETE ROAD BRIDGES

The deterioration of concrete bridges has posed significant problems in recent years to road authorities from both a technical and economic standpoint. Chapters I and II present an outline of the nature of the problem and the current status in the OECD countries. An analysis of the causes and mechanisms of deterioration is presented in Chapter III, while Chapter IV reviews the available methods for diagnosing deterioration in concrete bridges with emphasis placed on techniques not covered in previous OECD reports and which are applicable to in-service bridges. Techniques available for improving durability form the basis of Chapter V. Aspects of design and construction, strengthening existing bridges and innovative techniques such as cathodic protection and regrouting of prestressed concrete are described. Some general principles for a durability-based technology are introduced in Chapter VI, including assessment of structural reliability in deteriorating bridge management. Finally, Chapter VII summarises the strategy and tactics for meaningful research and development work aimed at improving the durability of concrete road bridges. Overall this report provides an up-to-date summary of research results and practical experience which are relevant to the technico-economic problems associated with the durability of concrete road bridges.
