TRAFFIC SAFETY OF ELDERLY PEOPLE. A METHOD TO COME TO EDUCATIVE AND INFRASTRUCTURAL MEASURES AIMED FOR THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

VERKEERSVEILIGHEID VAN OUDEREN. EEN METHODE OM TOT BUURTGERICHTE EDUCATIEVE EN INFRASTRUCTURELE MAATREGELEN TE KOMEN

Elderly people are at greater risk of having an accident as pedestrians and cyclists per vehicle mile compared with other road users. Loss of experience caused by less participation in traffic and loss of physical and psychical functions are probably explaining factors. Old cyclists and pedestrians have a negative experience of traffic and many of them, 30%, would prefer to stay at home more. Elderly people, on the average, have poor eyesight and recognize less stimuli; their reaction is slower, they move more slowly and less accurately than before. Those factors influence their traffic behaviour as well. For their traffic safety the field of vision, braking distance, speed, length of the crossing and traffic concentration must be up to certain standards. Besides the behaviour caused by the infrastructure, the behaviour of the elderly themselves cause increased risk. Education is a measure to influence their behaviour. A method is developed by which accident black spots on frequently used routes can be selected by interviews with elderly people. This method is tested in a residential area in the city of Eindhoven.
