THE DIAGNOSIS OF ALKALI-SILICA REACTION
This report deals primarily with the diagnosis of the alkali silica reaction and the assessment of the role this reaction has played in causing visible deterioration of structures. The stages in the investigation of deterioration in concrete structures are described first, followed by advice about site inspection and testing. The different types of laboratory tests are then described. These tests include preliminary examination of cores specimens, microscopic examination of sawn specimens, examination of thin sections, chemical analysis, examination of exudations and crystalline material, expansion testing, measurement of compressive and tensile strengths and their ratio, and alkali immersion tests. Sections on the evaluation of the laboratory and site findings are also provided, as is a section assessing the likely future of the structure affected by the alkali silica reaction. The rock and mineral constituents that are found in some concrete aggregates, and which have a potential to be alkali silica reactive, are listed in appendix D.
