NATIONAL EXPRESSWAY PRACTICES IN JAPAN. 6: TUNNEL

This report describes the design, construction and maintenance of motorway tunnels in Japan. A list of the major long road tunnels giving their width and length is provided in the general section. Chapter 2 describes the planning and design of the tunnel. Separate sections are provided on geological classification in Japan, tunnel ventilation, lighting, emergency facilities and interior finish. Construction details are given in chapter 3. These include selection of the excavation method, and various types of excavation technique such as blasting or machine excavation. Environmental problems during construction such as noise, vibration, water infiltration, and ground settlement are also discussed. Chapter 4 gives details of tunnel maintenance and operation, including traffic control. Details of five major tunnels are given in chapter 5. These are the nihonzaka, kanmon, takarazuka, enasen and fukushima tunnels. Current and future research topics are discussed in chapter 6. These include: a) exhaust gas treatment at the tunnel portal; b) exhaust of fire smoke; c) cleaning of tunnel walls; and d) development of a high speed and labour saving construction method.
