MODEL EXPERIMENTS AND CALCULATIONS ON THE STABILITY OF TUNNELS NEAR THE SURFACE. DISSERTATION

MODELLVERSUCHE UND BERECHNUNGEN ZUR STANDSICHERHEIT OBERFLAECHENNAHER TUNNEL

In order to be able to predict loads leading to collapse, investigations were carried out on the stability of tunnels near the surface in homogeneous soil, which has cohesion and friction. Cylindrical tunnels were examined, which are supported by an even internal pressure. Model experiments were carried out on model soil consisting of sand, clay and water. Data are given on the model laws, the model soil and the plane tunnel problem (kinetic, static and mixed solutions) and the process of calculation for the spatial problem (disc and shell method; solution according to Muehlaus and Kolymbas) are dealt with. The investigations showed that a tunnel near the surface in soil whose cohesion is greater than half the product density times the tunnel diameter is stable for unloaded surface of the area, in the sense of a collapse. For the spatial case, a satisfactory prediction of the collapse loads can be calculated by the shell method and using Muehlhaus' formula.
