ROUTE GUIDANCE AND IN-CAR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

This OECD study was undertaken by the road transport research programme and supported by fifteen member countries. The report centres on requirements for international standards of road-vehicle communication systems with emphasis on motorist needs, optimising traffic management strategies, upward compatibility of systems, cost/benefit assessments and the elements of a joint international evaluative research programme of alternative pilot systems. The report is in eight chapters with an annex containing a glossary of selected terms. Chapter I highlights past and ongoing R&D developments emphasizing the potential of new information and communication technologies as well as the need for international systems compatibility. Chapter II presents driver information needs and the requirements of the public road and transport authorities. Chapter III contains a functional description of the six broad classes of systems ranging from autonomous navigation aids to vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems. Chapters IV-VI deal successively with general system design considerations, national cost/benefit assessments and communication standards. The final two chapters present current research and system developments and outline the group's detailed recommendations for future research and international assessments. (TRRL)
