PROGRESS IN ABUTMENT SCOUR RESEARCH. NEW ZEALAND ROADING SYMPOSIUM 1987. VOLUME 4
Progress in bridge abutment scour research is reviewed in which a discussion of the scour mechanism, flow patterns, and the influence of abutment geometry and sediment properties is given. Some results from a recent study of abutment protection works are also given. Since studies have generally been restricted to the case of clear water scour and involve a reasonable schematization of the abutment, some of the limitations of the results are outlined. Mention is also made of studies currently in progress and the needs for future work. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 810782. (Author/TRRL)
