NIGHT TIME DELINEATION OF NEW ZEALAND OPEN ROADS. NEW ZEALAND ROADING SYMPOSIUM 1987. VOLUME 3

This paper reviews present New Zealand open road night time delineation, with particular reference to overseas practice and research. This paper shows that in most respects current New Zealand delineation standards are inferior to those employed in other developed countries. In particular some recent overseas innovations not currently widely used in New Zealand (reflective raised pavement markers and corner-cube reflectors) have been shown to have considerable safety benefits. The drawing together of this overseas experience enables proposals to be made which would considerably upgrade present delineation practice on New Zealand open roads. It is concluded that such an upgrading of the delineation on New Zealand roads would significantly reduce accidents, with a correspondingly high benefit/cost ratio.
