THE GREAT NORTHERN HIGHWAY (WESTERN AUSTRALIA). PLANNING, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION. NEW ZEALAND ROADING SYMPOSIUM 1987. VOLUME 1

The Fitzroy Crossing-Halls Creek section of Great Northern Highway in the Kimberley region of western Australia, was the last link in providing a sealed highway around Australia. As part of the commonwealth government's aim to provide a sealed national highway system, construction of the 276 km project was completed over a five year period between 1981 and 1986. The planning and design of the project was undertaken by the Main Roads Department of Western Australia, with some assistance from an engineering consultant and consultant surveyors. Construction was undertaken by contract as a requirement of the commonwealth government's funding of the project. Long range planning of this project enabled extensive investigations to be conducted into route selection, location and testing of materials and waterway analysis. The resultant optimisation of design, and the extensive use of locally available naturally occurring materials has enabled the construction of a road to national highway standards with minimal environmental impact whilst achieving "value for money".
