SELECTION OF MARGINAL AGGREGATES FOR SEALED ROAD CONSTRUCTION. NEW ZEALAND ROADING SYMPOSIUM 1987. VOLUME 1

The pavements committee of the New Zealand Road Research Unit published a major review of aggregate research in 1980 in which it promoted the use of a "road aggregate selection chart". This paper deals with a practical application of research findings and in particular: (a) reviews the main findings of the research promoted by the pavements committee which led to the formulation of the "road aggregate selection chart"; (b) presents the aggregate selection chart with some modifications by the author; (c) discusses factors affecting past and present use of marginal aggregates and describes the development of seal extension techniques used by the Whangarei County; and (d) compares the cost of past and present techniques and evaluates the risks of using marginal aggregates. The appropriate use of cheap, marginal aggregates will greatly increase the amount of seal extension work which can be done for a given financial budget. When a staged construction programme of upgrading is used, lifespans achieved can be well in excess of what is predicted by traditional NRB design methods for lightly and medium trafficked roads.
