CONCRETE BLOCK PAVEMENTS FOR URBAN ROADING. NEW ZEALAND ROADING SYMPOSIUM 1987. VOLUME 1

This paper discusses existing urban road pavements, and introduces a relatively new system using interlocking concrete blocks. Based on overseas findings and limited local research, comparisons are made between bituminous and block pavements on visual appearance, riding quality, traffic noise and skid resistance. Six different pavement systems are then described and cost-estimated for two types of urban roads. Results are tabulated for initial costs only, and for total costs including maintenance. The paper concludes with a recommendation that owners and specifiers always consider block pavement for low-to-medium density urban roading.
